Feminist Field Trip: Feminist Afrofuturism: Black History Month at PSU (2/15)

February 15 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join us as we take a Feminist Field Trip to Feminist Afrofuturism: Black History Month at PSU! In a series of four workshops at Plymouth State University, attendees will learn about the history and craft of crocheting, as well as partake in the creation of a collaborative art project. No need to attend all four workshops in succession – simply join us for as many as you can! Instruction, materials, snacks, and fellowship will be provided! Coordinate Ridesharing here: Rideshare / Carpool doc More on this series from PSU: This series aims to bring together a dynamic group of students, scholars, and community members to create a collaborative art project that celebrates the contributions of black women in American History. Students, faculty, and community members will come together throughout the month to collaboratively crochet large-scale renderings of Harriet Tubman (Abolitionist and Activist), Marian Anderson (20th Century Musician/Activist and UN Human Rights Committee Delegate), and Nina Simone (Civil Rights Activist and Musician). These three prominent African American Women highlight social justice work from the 1800s through the 1900s. Inspired by the Love Across the USA project, those involved in this project will come together to learn during weekly workshops and practice a traditional fiber craft. Following the completion of the event we will connect with the Museum of the White Mountains in order to display the work beyond Black History Month 2019. As such, Feminist Afrofuturism: Black History Month at PSU encompasses both past and present, history and future. Throughout history, women have had to work together and depend on each other to effect meaningful change, and these crocheted banners will be both a metaphor and an example of what we can achieve when we unite and work toward common goals.
